Mary Porter is drawn to abstraction and the need to know without knowledge. She likes to allow recurring motifs such as moss, lichen, candles and camouflage which represent a relinquishing of herself in the act of painting and meeting the abstract.
She recognises that nature is communicating a benevolent kindness that encourages us to work in conjunction with it in order to protect and preserve the natural world and our wellbeing.
Mixing colour intuitively as she proceeds can result in incongruous combinations which she is attracted to, as they represent an abandoning of the control and rules of her formal art training.
Mary is a painter living and working from the Mid North Coast, Australia on the lands of the Gumbaynggirr Nation.
